New York,N.Y.:  THE CHANTELS are singing on the Pop, Rhythm & Blues and Jazz music track, capturing audiences all over the world with their soft, unique sound. The three originals, Lois Harris Powell, Sonia Goring Wilson and Renee Minus White continue to sing in beautiful harmony with Noemi "Ami" Ortiz, their newest member, who belts out a strong lead on the group's top hits including "Maybe," "Look In My Eyes" and "I Love You So."  Jackie Landry Jackson, another valued member of THE CHANTELS, died from breast cancer in 1997.

THE CHANTELS launched  their careers in 1956 on New York City's Broadway, where they were discovered by Richard Barrett, lead singer of The Valentines.  All five of THE CHANTELS attended St.Anthony of Padua's Elementary School in Bronx,N.Y., and were members of St. Anthony's Church Choir.  Their unique sound was rooted from the institution's liturgical music.

Barrett recorded THE CHANTELS --Arlene Smith, Lois Harris, Jackie Landry, Sonia Goring and Renee Minus White on George Goldner's End record label.  " He's Gone"and" The Plea" started them off.  Their next release,"Maybe" became a major national hit and made THE CHANTELS stars overnight.

Other hits followed--"Every Night", "Whoever You Are",  "I Love You So", "How Could You Call It Off", "Goodbye To Love", "If You Try",  "I'm Confessin' ", "Sure Of Love", and others.

In 1959,Arlene Smith, the original lead, went solo.  THE CHANTELS  didn't skip a beat and in 1961 introduced new lead Annette Smith for what was to become the group's highest charted record, "Look In My Eyes" on Carlton Records.  This was followed by the up-tempo "Well,I Told You," a top 20 hit and was the answer record to Ray Charles' "Hit The Road,Jack".    THE CHANTELS  then went to Ludix Records .......  Other recordings followed.

Today,  THE CHANTELS are among the most popular and requested singing groups performing their numerous great hits. The group's live performance in 1999 for the PBS TV special, "Doo Wop `50", which featured the best vocal group stars of the 1950's and 60's received rave reviews nationwide.
